This day in history, we go back to 2010. The biggest oil spill in U.S. maritime history unfolded as the Deepwater Horizon rig sank in the Gulf of Mexico. The incident began the day before, when an uncontrolled rush of oil and gas surge out of BP's Macondo well causing that drill pipe to buckle, ultimately preventing the blowout preventer from kicking in and sealing that well hole. The oil and gas ignited and the rig exploded, killing 11 people and initially leaving a sheen of oil on the water's surface one mile wide and five miles long.
