In her “In The Know'' monthly report, CEO and CIO Cathie Wood discussed the biggest conversation in the past few days, which is the bank failures. First it was Silvergate Bank that caused a dip in the crypto market and now start-ups in Silicon Valley are getting hit with the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. Wood expressed that she has been in the markets for decades and from her experience, March, specifically this time in March, cathartic moments happen, particularly in banking. The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank can cause a catastrophic ripple effect in the market. It has been reported that 95% of the mid-tier bank’s deposits are over the $250,000 FDIC Insured amount, with the majority of Silicon Valley Bank’s clients being startups. When this occurred in the 2008-2009 banking crisis, the government came to the rescue …and those in Silicon Valley are asking for the same “too big to fail” treatment to avoid a cascade of negative events if depositors aren’t made whole.
Cathie shared her thoughts on the situation. Cathie Wood hasn’t shied away from criticizing the Fed on their handling of the inflation and their aggressive hiking, but Cathie believes the failures in the banking industry are not systemic but these bank failures will be the wake-up call that the Fed needs to start having a different conversation.
