One of Bitcoin’s biggest evangelists and self-proclaimed Bitcoin bull Michael Saylor, made headlines this week when he sold off some of his Bitcoin. The buying and selling of Bitcoin typically wouldn’t be big news, but Saylor has tirelessly devoted his time to educating the masses on the benefits of adopting Bitcoin as THE pristine asset in one’s portfolio, both personally and corporate. Earlier this year, Saylor resigned as CEO of Microstrategy, the publicly traded company which he founded in the 1980s, to dedicate all his time to Bitcoin. Therefore, it was news when Saylor decided to sell some off. However, the narrative seemed to be more FUD from the mainstream media again, putting a negative light on Bitcoin. In their filing, MicroStrategy said it acquired approximately 2,395 Bitcoin between the start of November and Dec. 21 through its MacroStrategy subsidiary, paying roughly $42,8 million in cash. It then sold 704 of the tokens on Dec. 22 for a total of around $11.8 million, citing tax purposes, before buying 810 more of them two days later. “MicroStrategy plans to carry back the capital losses resulting from this transaction against previous capital gains,” the company said to explain the Dec. 22 sale. This “may generate a tax benefit,” MicroStrategy said in its filing. To clear any possible misconstrued notions of his stance on Bitcoin, Saylor held a Q&A on Twitter, in which he addressed selling Bitcoin and his end goal.
