As the Sam Bankman-Fried and FTX saga continues, one of the biggest questions now is how deep is the contagion of this alleged fraud? It’s been speculated that hundreds of billions will be lost when all the dust is settled, with pundits and analysts suggesting that this will go down as one of the biggest frauds in financial history, not just crypto history. Visa is the latest to announce that it has terminated its global debit card agreements with FTX and the WEF (World Economic Forum) has quietly severed ties from FTX, removing any affiliation with the exchange from their website. On his podcast, Macroeconomist Raoul Pal engaged with his audience by doing an hour-long ‘Ask Me Anything’. Of course, the questions about the effects of FTX came flying in. Raoul revealed that, unfortunately, he had some experience in this field, as he was on the wrong side of fraud by MF Global and then CEO Jon Corzine. Corzine, who might be better known for being the Governor of New Jersey, owned a commodities future brokerage that blew up in 2011 due to excessive leverage and poor risk management surrounding an ill-fated bet on European sovereign debt. Raoul, being on the shit end of that stick, said it took years to recover the money, which is why he believes it will take years for this all to unravel and to see its true damage. Given that there is still massive uncertainty surrounding the situation, Raoul gave his take on how he can see this affecting the market.
Raoul Pal is the CEO and co-founder of Real Vision and CEO and publisher of The Global Macro Investor. He was co-manager of the GLG global macro hedge fund in London. In 2004, he retired from fund management and started The Global Macro Investor in January 2005. He was one of a relatively small number of investors to predict the mortgage crisis of 2008–2009. He was co-head of hedge fund sales in equities and equity derivatives at Goldman Sacks in Europe, based in London.
