Cathie Wood of Ark Invest sent an open letter to the Federal Reserve, expressing her concern over their aggressive measures to tame inflation. Analysts, pundits, and economists are anticipating another 50 basis point increase in November… and Cathie is a staunch NO against any more Fed Hikes. In her letter to the Fed, Wood stated;
The Fed seems focused on two variables that, in our view, are lagging indicators –– downstream inflation and employment ––both of which have been sending conflicting signals and should be calling into question the Fed’s unanimous call for higher interest rates.
In an interview with Yahoo! Finance, Wood empathically doubled down on her stance and expressed that what the Fed is doing now is dramatically worse than what Volker did in the 70s. Wood argued that when Volker raised rates, the percentage hike rate was lower and the timespan was much longer timespan, which allowed for businesses and consumers to adjust. Now, the Fed hike rate is drastically higher and drastically quicker, which isn’t allowing for the economy to see the full effect of each hike rate. According to Cathie, this will ultimately lead to a collapse in the near future despite what the lagging indicators are saying.
